In 2010, a Pfizer-sponsored campaign, titled "How Much Viagra Will I Take" was touted as a marketing opportunity to "manage the demand for the drug." Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant, was not alone. The pharmaceutical industry had been in the news for years. It was the time of the Viagra commercials, but the drug industry had not been as excited about the sales potential of Pfizer's impotence treatment Viagra. The drug was being tested in more than 100 trials, and the FDA had approved Viagra for use as a "natural" treatment for male impotence. The drug had been marketed in large numbers, but the FDA had rejected Viagra because of the safety concerns that the drug had brought. The FDA also rejected Pfizer's other drug, Levitra, because it had not been shown to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction. The company had also "lured" Pfizer to take Viagra, which would have allowed Pfizer to "keep" the drug off the market. Pfizer's ads did not address the potential side effects of Viagra and Levitra. It was the first time that a drug could be marketed in a positive manner. In 2010, a TV ad showed the product, called "Love & Other Drugs," which was based on a movie about a pharmaceutical salesman trying to "get out of bed." The drug company had not approved it to sell to consumers. The FDA approved Viagra for use in the United States and Canada, and the FDA approved Levitra for use in the United States. The drug would be sold without a prescription for erectile dysfunction. Pfizer was already working on a marketing campaign to sell Viagra. By using the marketing campaign, Pfizer created a product that would be marketed as a treatment for the "erection" of male impotence. The drug was tested on mice and the results showed that it did not have a beneficial effect on the male animal. Pfizer promoted the drug in such a way that it was marketed to men as Viagra. The drug was then marketed in the United States as a treatment for impotence. "The company had never approved Viagra for use in the United States to treat impotence," a Pfizer spokesperson told USA Today, "and the drug was approved to be used as an aid to that." The drug had been shown to be effective in treating male impotence, but the FDA had rejected the drug because it had not been shown to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction. "The company had never approved Viagra for use in the United States to treat impotence," a Pfizer spokesperson told USA Today, "and the drug was approved to be used as an aid to that." The company was not in a position to comment on the marketing. "We will continue to promote the drug in the United States and other countries and market it to patients in the United States and other countries as a treatment for erectile dysfunction," Pfizer spokesperson Brian Schaffer told USA Today.
